De pontische rododendron (Rhododendron ponticum) is een plant uit de heifamilie (Ericaceae) die van nature voorkomt in zuidelijk Europa en Klein-Azië, maar veel aangeplant wordt vanwege de mooie bloemen. De struik komt in Nederland verwilderd voor op buitenplaatsen en in bossen, vooral op zandgrond. Als tuinplant is de pontische rododendron geschikt voor de vorming van een heg. De struik plant zich voort door zaden en vegetatief door beworteling van de grond rakende takken.
De nectar van de pontische rododendron is giftig door de erin voorkomende grayanotoxinen. Vergiftigingsverschijnselen treden op tot twee uur na het eten van de honing en uiten zich in tintelingen in vingers en tenen, hoofdpijn, misselijkheid, het afnemen van de hartslag tot 50 slagen per minuut (bradycardie) en bij een ernstige vergiftiging zelfs tot bewusteloosheid.
