Een halfheester met leerachtig, glanzend groen blad. Het is een wintergroene bodembedekker dat zich uitbreidt via ondergrondse worteluitlopers waardoor er al snel een dicht tapijt van Pachysandra gevormd wordt. Het is dan ook een ideale, altijd groene bodembedekker voor het opvullen van taluds en plantvakken die je snel wil laten dicht groeien zodat je er geen onkruid meer moet tussenuit wieden. Hoe meer uren zonneschijn ze krijgen, hoe vochtiger de standplaats moet zijn.
Witte bloempjes in april en mei maar van weinig betekenis, het is vooral het blad dat opvalt ook omdat het wintergroen is.
