Liguster, wilde liguster

De wilde liguster (Ligustrum vulgare) is een plant uit de olijffamilie (Oleaceae). De plant komt van nature voor in de Benelux en komt op alle continenten voor, behalve in Amerika.
De wilde liguster is een snelle groeier die in de winter afhankelijk van de temperatuur zijn bladeren behoudt. Omdat de plant ook goed tegen snoeien kan, wordt deze veel gebruikt in heggen. (Maar meestal gebruikt men voor heggen de uit Japan afkomstige Liguster ovalifolium). De wilde liguster bloeit van juni tot augustus en heeft zwarte besjes die bij vogels populair zijn.
De liguster is voor mensen giftig. De "gewone" Liguster (Ligustrum ovalifolium) is ideaal als haag maar ook als vrijstaande struik.
